Composition in a new genre

From my research, I learned that live music events are one of kind experiences that are valued by most that attend them. Many call them art and it reasonable to agree. This is the main point I pulled away from my research and thus is the key component of my composition in a new genre. Artists sell experiences, so I decided to sell the experience with a video advertisement. Through looking at the elements of the rhetorical situation and live music events, one can see why this genre is a great representation of selling this experience.

The lighting effects, energizing music, and audience members around make an amazing combination that is responsible for the popularity of live music events. Naturally, I knew that these had to be elements of my composition in a new genre. The video advertisement is an efficient way of detailing the atmosphere of live music events. With the fantastic technology we have today, I was able to pull short clips of music events I’ve attended in the past to use. This solves the visual problem of describing this experience. The next component to include was the audio. The solution also acted as a way to represent the energy at these events. John Marshall (2016) describes how music affects emotions and Jeff Beck (2013) explains how this is used in “hype videos” to raise energy and excite the viewer. Therefore, I chose a very energetic EDM song and it begins playing right before the drop. The combination of these elements is how I was able to describe live music events with my video advertisement.

This composition in a new genre is also affected by the rhetorical situation. I knew that my audience was composed of those who attend live music events. My goal was to get this audience to buy in to what I’m selling with my video advertisement. I provided supporting evidence proving my point even further with an interview quote, survey statistic, and previews of live music events. I also adjusted the tempo of my advertisement to match the audience. Since we see numerous commercials every day, an advertisement must stand out to be successful. Fast paced commercials grab the eye of this audience which are often accused of having short attention spans. This is how the rhetorical situation affected my composition in a new genre.

After looking at the elements of the rhetorical situation and live music events, I created the composition that I did. I believe it includes the many elements that were important to my research in a video advertisement.
